At SLS Business English Seminars you can learn English writing skills or effective communication techniques for the business world. A similar seminar was held in June and was well received by the participants; therefore we have decided to organize further seminars at the end of July at the Shane Academy in Roppongi. Shane Academy is an English language training centre for business executives and company employees.

"Shane Business English Writing"
The lesson addresses effective business English writing, focusing on sentence structure, paragraph structure, effective e-mail writing, idiomatic expression for business letters and negotiations.

"Shane Business English Communication"

Even though it's the rainy season a special event, "British gallery", was held at Shane Roppongi Academy on a lovely sunny day on 17 of June.

The doors opened at 10 a.m., and visitors began to pop in to talk to teachers, check STEP BULATS test scores on computers and watch 'MANOR HOUSE' in a screen room. We arranged two free seminars from the afternoon and the venue was full with around 20 participants just before the seminar started.

The theme of the seminar was "British Pop Culture" and a lecturer was invited from the British Council. He presented an interesting workshop for film. The participants tried to guess what was going to happen next or made questions for each other about the vocabulary in the film. All the attendees enjoyed the free English workshop and learnt many things about Britain and English.

From 3 o'clock, the study director of Shane Language Services provided a seminar about the IELTS exam. IELTS is a very important language test for those considering studying abroad or migrating to the U.K., Australia or New Zealand. The participants were all interested in the test and they listened carefully to the lecture.

After the seminars everyone enjoyed chatting with teachers over a cup of tea and biscuits, watching a British DVD, or testing their English abilities on the computer again. We hope that all the visitors enjoyed the day learning English and about British culture and we would like to thank all the participants, the British Council and STEP for supporting us to make the event a great success.

SLS were selected to provide a three-day seminar for PHD candidates and Doctors for the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) Summer Programme. Doctors, fellows and PHD students come to Sokendai University, situated in the picturesque hills above Hayama, to present their research and findings through poster presentations. Our job was to assist the Japanese Doctors and PHD candidates improve their presentational ability to other scientists outside of their research area.

The challenge was to enable them to present their research to non-specialists in terms and language that could be understood by people from other fields. Despite the highly specific nature and complexity of the subjects, big improvements were made by addressing the fundamental issue of any presentation, namely ｡ﾆWhat is your point?｡ﾇ and ｡ﾆWhat message do you want to communicate?｡ﾇ. By addressing these issues the participants were able to focus on the most important key issues resulting in improved comprehension and retention of that information on behalf of the listeners.

The JSPS Summer Programme really is a gathering of some of the World's most intelligent and promising individuals. It is hard to imagine such intelligence all in one room. It is becoming more and more important for scientists to be able to communicate their research to non-specialists so that the shared knowledge base can expand and other scientific areas can utilize effectively such data and research. SLS were honoured to be able to take part in this programme and hope that we have contributed in some small way to this overall objective. As one of the official agents of the Cambridge University STEP BULATS examination, SLS teachers are being sponsored to undergo STEP BULATS training in order to become officially Cambridge University recognized BULATS examiners. The first phase of the testing produced a 100% pass rate with all teachers selected now officially recognized examiners. This is a great testament to the quality and professionalism of our teaching team. Well done to all concerned!

Shane English School Japan has opened its first school to specialize in Business English. The SHANE Academy opened in Roppongi, central Tokyo, last month. The school aims to help students develop the flexible language skills needed in the modern business world.

All teachers are provided by Shane Language Services, which sends teachers out to businesses. In addition to regular classrooms, the academy has lecture rooms to accomodate any business's needs. Courses include presentation skills, correspondence writing, MBA preparation, and cross-cultural understanding.

Shane English School Japan, which is headquartered in the Edogawa ward of Tokyo, operates over 200 schools centered around the capital and 50 schools overseas.
