Without the necessary linguistic skills
and knowledge of language, it is of course
more or less impossible to communicate effectively
in a complex environment. Nevertheless the
acquisition of language skills is only one
step along the way towards Effective International
Communication. Without an understanding of
our counterpart's cultural patterns and a
sensitivity to cultural differences, EIC
is virtually impossible. Cultural differences
have deep-reaching effects on every aspect
of our daily life, including the way that
we interact with each other, they way we
think about and plan our time, the way
that we manage people and time, and of course,
our patterns of communication.
Furthermore,
our patterns of communication and listening
patterns are culturally determined and hence
the way that we make presentations, arrange
meetings, negotiate and use language to manage
our staff inevitably differs from culture
to culture. At the Academy our courses cover
all these three areaslanguage, communication
skills and intercultural understandingto
prepare people for the challenge of international
communication in the 21st century.
